En février 2022, au festival Sons d’hiver, le contrebassiste new-yorkais William Parker présenta sa fresque musicale Trail of Tears, évoquant et invoquant les esprits d’un moment tragique de l’histoire nord-américaine : la déportation des Cherokees sur des terres dont ils pensaient qu’elles n’appartenaient à personne. Au même moment ou presque, l’écrivain martiniquais Patrick Chamoiseau revenait de sa recherche de l’épave du Leusden, navire négrier qui coula avec sa « cargaison », au large des côtes de Guyane, en 1738. Pour aborder comme il se doit de tels sujets dans le tout-monde, et esquisser une nouvelle « cartographie du sensible », Patrick Chamoiseau et William Parker ont entretenu une correspondance, entre l’intime et l’universel, ou le pluriversel, durant les quelques semaines entourant la représentation de Trail of Tears. L’intégralité de cet échange est rassemblé pour la première fois dans ce recueil.
In February 2022, at the Sons d’hiver festival, New York bass player William Parker presented his Trail of Tears musical fresco, evoking and invoking the spirits of a tragic moment in North American history: the deportation of the Cherokee to lands they believed belonged to no one. At almost the same time, Martinican writer Patrick Chamoiseau was returning from his search for the wreck of the Leusden, the slave ship that sank with its “cargo” in 1738, on the Guiana coast. In order to tackle such subjects in the Whole-World, and to sketch out a new “cartography of the sensitive”, Patrick Chamoiseau and William Parker have kept up a correspondence, between the intimate and the universal, or the pluriversal, during the few weeks surrounding the Trail of Tears performance. The full text of this correspondence is brought together for the first time in this collection.
