Jordan’s pink city of Petra inspires dreams of incense-laden caravans and legendary architecture. But what actually is this capital of a “kingdom of the sands” and who are its inhabitants – daring Arab caravaners who successfully resisted attacks by the Greeks, and later the Romans ? The Nabatean civilization, which sank into oblivion until the early 19th century, is being rediscovered through the intense development of archaeological and epigraphical research. The aim of this richly documented work is to venture beyond customary clichés about Petra and the Nabateans and, based upon recent or little-known research, attempt to shed new light on the daily life of a Semitic people who lived on the fringe of the Hellenistic and Roman worlds, yet actively interacted with both cultures .

Notes Biographiques :
Marie-Jeanne Roche est docteur en histoire (Paris X-Nanterre) ; elle est actuellement chargée de conférences à l'École pratique des hautes études (Paris-Sorbonne), et s'est spécialisée dans la civilisation nabatéenne. Elle dirige actuellement un projet épigraphique et archéologique au sud de Pétra. Jean-Noël Robert, latiniste et historien de Rome, a publié aux éditions Les Belles Lettres une quinzaine d'ouvrages sur l'histoire des mentalités dans l'Antiquité romaine, parmi lesquels Les Plaisirs à Rome (1986, nlle édition 2005), Rome la gloire et la liberté (2008), Les Romains et la mode (2011) ou L'Empire des loisirs (Signet, 2011). Il dirige en outre la collection « Realia » et celle des « Guides Belles lettres des civilisations » dans laquelle il a signé deux volumes, Rome et Les Étrusques.
