This interesting collection of English detective stories contains two 19th-century examples - Conan Doyle's "The Five Orange Pips", in which Sherlock Holmes battles against a criminal organisation; and Charles Dickens' "Hunted Down", in which a ruthless murderer is brought to justice. There are also two 20th-century examples - "The Stir Outside the Cafe Royal" by Clarence Rook, where a woman tracks down her fiancé's killer; and "The Oracle of the Dog" by G. K. Chesterton, in which Father Brown solves a difficult murder case.
