Before writing The Westing Game, Ellen Raskin was an incredibly accomplished graphic artist, designing dozens of books, including the cover for the first edition of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. When working on The Westing Game, Ellen Raskin also thought about the design cover to cover, because she believed that the layout of the book helped contribute to the reading experience of the story.
